A few years ago I discovered a group of people that play cards at restaurants in the GTA. And it wasn’t just any kind of card game.
It was Texas Hold ‘Em poker!
Just for the record, we play for FUN, no cash changes hands, as it is illegal to play cash games outside of a casino.
This league has come a long way since I joined.
A new owner, Kyle Dacey, took over two years ago and revitalized it.
He started advertising on social media and websites to attract new players. He has tournaments in which you can win a seat at a casino to play in a cash game. The buy-in for this casino tournament is over $200.00 and has a cash payout to the winner of a few thousand.
There is also a tournament every “season” (4 months), that all players can participate in.
All the people that make it to final table, eight players, win a prize that day.
It’s a great place to come and relax and make new friends.
The caliber of the players is very high.
Even though we play just for fun, many people play as if they were in a cash game. After all, our pride is on the line.
The winner each evening gets a gift certificate for the restaurant.
You can play as little or as often as you like. Some people play only once or twice a month while others are there three or four times a week.
There is a game in Aurora on Monday evenings, while Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, and Sunday afternoons games are played in Newmarket. Thursday evening games are played in Stouffville.
This group is for young and old alike.
There are young men and women in their 20’s right up to their 70’s playing the game.
You must be at least 18 years of age to play. It is for amateurs as well as seasoned players.

Kyle is always on the lookout for new venues to host the games.
