NEWMARKET -- Family, friends and Community Leaders gathered at Madsen’s Greenhouse Banquet Hall to honor their neighbours.
‘The Good Neighbour Awards’ were given out to 10 lucky recipients after 40 nominations were received.
“York Region is pleased to recognize deserving Housing York tenants who play a role in creating vibrant, healthy and welcoming communities,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “Bricks and mortar build houses, but it’s the people who create communities. That’s the environment we strive to build for over 4,000 people who call Housing York home.”
Demonstrating community spirit, honouring cultural diversity, taking leadership in their communities, performing an act of kindness or showing pride in their home and community were some of the criteria that was looked at by the selection committee when determining who would get the awards.
Pamela Lewis, who lives in Elmwood Gardens in Whitchurch-Stouffville said, this award makes her very proud and that “I’m a giver, not a taker.”
Her neighbours say she is never in a bad mood and always available to help them by taking them grocery shopping, listening to their problems or helping her neighbour with minor problems in their apartment.
Theresa Killingbeck, daughter of Joan Roshanian, was beaming as she looked at her mother today.
You could see the pride in her face as her mother received the Good Neighbour Award. Joan resides Mapleglen Residences in Vaughan. She always has a smile on her face and make everyone feel welcome.
“Joan makes you feel loved and respected. She’s like a sister to us.”
