OSHAWA -- There's a new chief in town as the City of Oshawa has announced this year's winner of the Junior Fire Chief essay contest. Grade 6 student Inaaya Mufti of Kedron Public School and her essay on "The importance of fire safety in your home," has become the latest junior fire chief. The contest asks Grade 5 and Grade 6 students to describe how their households practice fire safety, and asks them to think critically about preventing and escaping fires if they do occur. "The junior fire chief program is a great way to assist our Grade 5 and 6 students and their families to enhance their knowledge of the importance of fire safety," said Councillor Bob Chapman. Inaaya was one of 10 finalists chosen to present her essay to a panel of judges, and was recently announced as the 2017 junior fire chief at an assembly at her school. As the winner she received: - a new bicycle from Canadian Tire - a tablet from Best Buy - gift certificates to Neb's Fun World, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Montana's - a junior fire chief hoodie - one week to spend at junior firefighter camp - dinner at McDonald's Inaaya will also fulfill her duties as junior fire chief by taking part in events including: - June 10, Community Fire Safety Day - June 18, Oshawa Fiesta Parade - November 18, Oshawa Santa Claus Parade |
