AJAX -- Ajax Downs is quickly becoming a mainstay for families in Durham on holidays.
On Fri. July 1., the Ajax Casino held their annual Canada Day Celebration, which attracted residents from all over Durham Region.
The morning began with six exciting Quarter Horse Races and a return from former Talking Quarters host Nick Coukus.
It rained on and off for most of the morning, but that didn’t stop the party.
Once the races concluded, the sun magically began to come out as if in preparation for the BBQ.
Despite the bad weather the Ajax community brought good attitudes to celebrate our countries 149th birthday, and part of the great turnout has to be accredited to the free shuttle busses taking people to and from the event.
The rest of the day involved constant entertainment featuring The Drifters, and a fire show by FlameOz followed by fireworks.
Late in the night the track began to fill up, as people prepared for the fire show on the main stage. The rain had disappeared for the day but was replaced with a cold wind that had many walking around wrapped in blankets.
The fire show lasted about 15 minutes and was a great primer for the fireworks. The fire show has become a fan favorite and got big cheers from the crowd. Keeping the energy up, the host for the evening had everyone participate in a countdown to the fireworks. They started off slow but ended with a bang, receiving a large round of applause.
A big thank you goes to Ajax Downs for supplying family friendly fun for the people of Durham Region on Canada Day.
